Let \({\mathbb H}^n\) be the hyperbolic space, \(P_k\) be the he GJMS operator and \(\nabla_{{\mathbb H}^n}\) be the hyperbolic gradient. In this paper the authors study the existence, nonexistence and symmetry of nontrivial solutions for an equation of type\[\left\{\begin{array}{lll}P_ku=\lambda u+|u|^{\frac{2k}{n-2k}}u, & { in}\; \Omega,\\ \nabla^\alpha_{{\mathbb H}^n}u=0,& {on}\; \partial \Omega,\\ \alpha=0,...,k-1,\end{array}\right. \tag{1}\]where \(\Omega\) is a bounded domain in \({\mathbb H}^n\) with boundary of class \(C^1\). A similar problem is also investigated in the entire hyperbolic space \({\mathbb H}^n\). The results from this paper complement those obtained by \textit{H. Brézis} and \textit{L. Nirenberg} [Commun. Pure Appl. Math. 36, 437--477 (1983; Zbl 0541.35029)] when the hyperbolic space \({\mathbb H}^n\) is replaced by the Euclidean space \({\mathbb R}^n\) and \(P_k\) is replaced by the Laplace operator.
