\(X\) denotes a subset of the real line \(\mathbb{R}\) with a least two points. Let the function \(f:X\rightarrow \mathbb{C}\) be of bounded variation with total variation denoted by \(\mathcal{V}(f)\). The space of all bounded variation functions endowed with the natural norm \({\|\cdot \|} =\max \{{\|\cdot \|}_{\infty}, \mathcal{V}(f)\}\), is denoted by \(BV(X)\). The first main theorem gives a description of the surjective isometries between two spaces of bounded variation functions \(T: BV(X)\rightarrow BV(Y)\). \(T\) is a surjective linear isometry iff there exist some $\lambda$ of modulus~$1$, a monotone bijection \(\varphi:Y \rightarrow X\), and an \(\epsilon \in \{\pm 1\}\) such that for every \(f \in BV(X)\) \[ T(f)= T(0) +\lambda [f \circ \varphi]^{\epsilon} \] where \([f]^1=f\) and \([f]^{-1} =\overline{f}.\) In particular, \(T \in\mathrm{Iso}_{\mathbb{R}} (BV(X))\) (resp., \(T \in \mathrm{Iso}_{\mathbb{C}} (BV(Y))\) if and only if \[ T(f)= \lambda [f \circ \varphi]^{\epsilon} \quad (\text{resp., }T(f)= \lambda [f \circ \varphi]) \qquad \text{ for all } f \in BV(X). \] The paper also establishes the 2-topological reflexivity of Iso$(BV(X), BV(Y))$. We recall the notion of approximate 2-local surjective isometry from {Definition~2.2.} A map \(T:BV(X)\rightarrow BV(Y)\) is a 2-local surjective linear isometry if for any pair \(f,g \in BV(X)\) there exists a sequence \(\{T_{f,g,n}\} \in \mathrm{Iso} (B(X), B(Y))\) such that \[ T(f)= \lim_n \lambda_{f,g,n} [f \circ \varphi_{f,g,n}]^{\epsilon_{f,g,n}} \] and \[ T(g)= \lim_n\lambda_{f,g,n} [g \circ \varphi_{f,g,n}], \qquad \text{ for all } f \in BV(X) \] The main and very interesting result reads: {Theorem 3.1.} The set Iso$(BV(X), BV(Y))$ is 2-topologically reflexive. Every 2-local surjective isometry is a surjective isometry. The proof is carried out in a series of steps, and an interesting corollary follows that the sets \(\mathrm{Iso}_{\mathbb{R}}(BV(X), BV (Y ))\) and \(\mathrm{Iso}_{\mathbb{C}}(BV(X), BV (Y ))\) are both 2-topologically reflexive. The results are of great interest to operator theorists. I found the paper very easy to read and with potential impact either to extend techniques to other related spaces and even to include vector-valued versions of the same type of spaces.
