Let \((X,d)\) be a metric space, \(f:X\to X\) and \(T:X\to CB(X)\) (\(CB(X)\) being the family of all nonempty, closed and bounded subsets of \(X\)). The first result of this paper is a coincidence point theorem for mappings \(f\) and \(T\) under a contractive condition expressed using \(\delta\)-distance in \((X,d)\) (where \(\delta(A,B)=\sup\{d(a,b):a\in A,b\in B\}\) for \(A,B\subset X\)). Further, the authors obtain a unique common fixed point result for two single-valued mappings on \(X\) under a condition of similar type. Finally, they show that orbital continuity of a pair of \(R\)-weakly commuting mappings on a complete metric space is equivalent to the fixed point property under the given contractive condition. Several appropriate examples are presented.
