In this paper the authors consider a system of hyperbolic partial differential/integral equations which is obtained by the coupling of a viscoelastic type equation with a wave equation in dimension one. The coupling is determined by the second order spatial derivatives of the unknown functions. The authors impose some conditions on the relaxation function for the viscous effect and they obtain estimates for the time decay depending on the assumptions. Energy arguments are used to obtain the time decay estimates (concavity arguments are also used). A few examples illustrate the general results.
