The Eisenstein cohomology has many important applications in number theory, such as the special values of the \(L\)-functions, however our knowledge of the Eisenstein cohomology is still far from being complete. Let us denote by \(G_2\) the Chevalley group over \(\mathbb{Z}\) of type \(G_2\). In the paper under the review, the authors obtain a complete description of the boundary and Eisenstein cohomology of the arithmetic group \(G_2(\mathbb{Z})\) with coefficients in any finite dimensional highest weight representation of \(G_2\). To compute the boundary cohomology, authors use a spectral sequence whose first page consists of the cohomology of each boundary component, together with the classical results on the cohomology of \(\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\). To compute the Eisenstein cohomology, authors use a constructive method involving the theory of Eisenstein series, intertwining operators, and \(L\)-functions, following [\textit{G. Harder}, in: Proceedings of the international congress of mathematicians (ICM), August 21-29, 1990, Kyoto, Japan. Volume II. Tokyo etc.: Springer-Verlag. 779--790 (1991; Zbl 0752.11023)].
