Let \(\mathbb{M}_{n}\) be the set of all \(n\times n\) matrices over a field \( \mathbb{F}\), and \(\mathcal{Y\subseteq }\mathbb{M}_{n}\). A pair of maps \( T_{1},T_{2}\) from \(\mathcal{Y}\) into \(\mathbb{M}_{n}\) is said to satisfy the pencil condition for singularity on \(\mathcal{Y}\) if for all \(A,B\in \mathcal{Y}\) and nonzero \(\lambda \in \mathbb{F}\) we have (\(A_{1}+\lambda B_{1}\) is singular) \(\iff \) (\(T_{1}(A_{1})+\lambda T_{2}(B_{2})\) is singular). The one-sided pencil condition for singularity on \(\mathcal{Y}\) is obtained if we replace \(\iff \) by \(\implies\). The main theorem of the paper is that the following conditions are equivalent: (1) \(T_{1},T_{2}\) satisfies the pencil condition for singularity on \(\mathbb{M}_{n}\); (2) \( T_{1},T_{2}\) satisfy the one-sided pencil condition for singularity on \( \mathbb{M}_{n}\) and there exists a matrix \(D\) such that both \(D\) and \( T_{2}(D)\) are nonsingular; (3) \(T_{1}=T_{2}\) and there exist nonsingular matrices \(P\) and \(Q\) such that either \(T_{1}(A)=PAQ\) for all \(A\in \mathbb{M} _{n}\) or \(T_{1}(A)=PA^{t}Q\) for all \(A\in \mathbb{M}_{n}\) (\(t\) denotes the transpose). The paper also includes many variations of this theme.
