Let \(A\) be a finite dimensional algebra over a field \(k\). Then the simple \(A\)-modules form a simple minded system in the derived category \(\mathcal{D}^b(\mod A)\). It is known that their extension closure is abelian, and there is a Happel-Reiten-Smalø tilting theory for such abelian subcategory of \(\mathcal{D}^b(\mod A)\). Indeed, the extension closure is the heart of a bounded t-structure of \(\mathcal{D}^b\pmod A\). Let \(\mathcal{C}\) be a triangulated category and \(\mathcal{S}\) a set of objects of \(\mathcal{C}\). If \(\mathcal{S}\) is a simple minded system then \(\Hom _{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{S}, \Sigma ^l\mathcal{S})=0\) for any \(l<0\). Relaxing this to \(\Hom _{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{S}, \Sigma ^l\mathcal{S})=0\) for \(-w<l<0\), we get the notion of \textit{\(w\)-simple minded system}, where \(w\) is an fixed integer with \(w\geq 2\). Unlike simple minded systems, the extension closure of a \(w\)-simple minded system is not the heart of a \(t\)-structure, and one may ask whether this extension closure is abelian. The present paper answers this question positively. More precisely, the author proves that the extension closure of a \(w\)-simple minded system is abelian, and there is a tilting theory for such abelian category. The proof is based on Quillen's notion of exact categories, in particular a theorem by Dyer which provides exact subcategories of triangulated categories. The result of this paper is an analogue of the previous work. Indeed, the fact that the extension closure of a \(w\)-simple minded system is abelian is a negative counterpart to the result from (higher) positive cluster tilting theory that if \(\mathcal{T}\) is a cluster tilting subcategory, then \((\mathcal{T}\ast \Sigma \mathcal{T})/[\mathcal{T}]\) is an abelian quotient category. Above all, this paper is not only an important progress on simple minded theory and cluster tilting theory, but also it is well constructed for the convenience of readers. It also introduces some useful strategies which may be helpful for other problems in representation theory. The author is an expert in simple minded theory, and anyone willing to learn about this subject is highly recommended to read this paper.
