A Krull-Schmidt category is an additive category such that each object decomposes (essentially uniquely) into a finite direct sum of indecomposable objects having local endomorphism rings. The present paper provides a self-contained introduction to Krull-Schmidt categories, which are explained in terms of projective covers. The author discusses additive categories and the radical, projective covers, Krull-Schmidt categories and chain conditions.
