A subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) is called ``almost subnormal'' if there exists a finite sequence of subgroups \(H=H_1 < H_2 < \dots <H_r=G\) where for each \(i \in \{1,\dots,r-1\}\) either \(H_i \lhd H_{i+1}\) or \([H_{i+1}:H_i]<\infty\). The author investigates the maximal subgroups of an almost subnormal subgroup \(H\) of \(G=D^\times\) where \(D\) is a weakly locally finite division ring of infinite center. In the main results, the author proves that if \(H\) is such a maximal subgroup, then \(H\) is abelian provided that \(H\) is either locally finite or an \(FC\)-group. The author also proves a theorem on the existence of non-cyclic free subgroups of a maximal subgroup \(H\) in such a \(G\).
