In the present paper the authors study invariant Einstein metrics on generalized real flag manifolds associated to a split real form of a complex simple Lie algebra of classical type, whose isotropy representation decomposes into two or three irreducible subrepresentations. The situation is more delicate than the corresponding problem for complex flag manifolds, because the isotropy representation can have equivalent summands, so there may exist non-diagonal Riemannian metrics. The isotropy representation and invariant Riemannian metrics for such real flag manifolds have been studied by \textit{M. Patrão} and \textit{L. A. B. San Martin} [Indag. Math., New Ser. 26, No. 3, 547--579 (2015; Zbl 1360.22020)]. Examples of such spaces with two or three isotropy summands are \(\operatorname{SO}(4)/\operatorname{S}(\operatorname{O}(2)\times \operatorname{O}(2))\), \((\operatorname{SO}(\ell)\times \operatorname{SO}(\ell +1))/(\operatorname{SO}(\ell-1)\times \operatorname{SO}(\ell))\) \(\ell\ge 3, \ell\ne 4\) (2 summands) and \(\operatorname{U}(\ell)/(\operatorname{O}(d)\times \operatorname{U}(\ell-d))\) \(\ell \ge 3, 2\le d\le \ell-1\) (3 summands) (cf. Table 1 of the paper for complete list). In the present work the authors study Einstein metrics on these spaces as well the isometry problem.
