Geiss, Keller, and Oppermann [\textit{C. Geiss} et al., J. Reine Angew. Math. 675, 101--120 (2013; Zbl 1271.18013)] introduced \((n + 2)\)-angulated categories as a ``higher dimensional'' analogue of triangulated categories. The concept of \(n\)-exangulated categories as a higher dimensional generalization of extriangulated categories provides a unifying formulation of \((n+2)\)-angulated categories and \(n\)-exact categories [\textit{M. Herschend} et al., J. Algebra 570, 531--586 (2021; Zbl 1506.18015)]. Let \((\mathcal{C},\Sigma, \Theta)\) be a Krull-Schmidt \((n + 2)\)-angulated category and \(\mathcal{A}\) be an \(n\)-extension closed subcategory of \(\mathcal C\). The main result of this paper shows that \(\mathcal A\) has the structure of an \(n\)-exangulated category. This result gives \(n\)-exangulated categories that are neither \(n\)-exact categories nor \((n + 2)\)-angulated categories.
