The authors study the problem of the existence of closed embedded magnetic geodesics of given speed on the round \(2\)-sphere relative to an arbitrary magnetic field [\textit{V. I. Arnol'd}, Usp. Mat. Nauk 41, No. 6(252), 3--18 (1986; Zbl 0618.58021)]. They prove existence for sufficiently large energies (Theorem 4.2) and an approximation result for magnetic geodesics (Theorem 5.2) under assumptions on averaging of the magnetic field strength. The approach differs from the contact type surface method in [\textit{C. Viterbo}, Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Anal. Non Linéaire 4, 337--356 (1987; Zbl 0631.58013)].
