In this paper, the authors derive deterministic and stochastic homogenisation results for free-discontinuity functionals in the space of functions of bounded variation. One of the arguments of these functionals can exhibit discontinuities, and the integrands satisfy linear growth and coercivity conditions in the gradient and in the jump, respectively. Such functionals are commonly used in variational models of fracture mechanics, in the theory of computer vision and image segmentation, and in problems involving phase transformations. The two main results of the paper are a deterministic homogenisation result for such functionals, where the integrands are not necessarily periodic, and a stochastic homogenisation result, under the additional assumption of stationarity of integrands. In particular, the authors characterise the limit integrands in terms of asymptotic cell formulas, as in the classical case of periodic homogenisation.
