The paper deals with a classical problem of determining pairs \(H, J\) of closed connected subgroups of an algebraic group \(G\) with finitely many \((H, J)\)-double cosets in \(G\). Main consideration is given to the case of isometry groups \(G\) and the pairs \((H, J)\), where \(H\) is simple and \(J = P_k\) is a maximal parabolic subgroup of \(G\), i.e. the stabilizer of a totally singular \(k\)-dimensional space. Let \(V\) be a finite dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field \(K\), \(\operatorname{char} K \geq 0\), and \(G\) be a classical group of type \(B_n\), \(C_n\) or \(D_n\) with the natural module \(V\). In the paper, a finite list of triples \((H, V, k)\), \(k \geq 2\), is determined with the property that if \(H\) has finitely many orbits on totally singular \(k\)-spaces of \(V\) then the triple \((H, V, k)\) is in the given list (Proposition~4.1, Table~2). A number of cases in the list occur when \(k=2\). The latter was addressed in Section~5, where a classification for the case when \(J\) is the stabilizer of a totally singular 2-space is provided (see also Theorem~1, Table~1). The case \(k > 2\) remains open, while the case of \(k=1\) is covered in the author's previous paper [J. Algebra 570, 75--118 (2021; Zbl 1467.20034)].
