The paper is devoted to the Liénard system \[ x'=y-F(x),\,\,\,y'=-g(x),\tag{1} \] where \(F,\,g:\mathbb{R}\to\mathbb{R}\) are continuous functions satisfying \(F(0)=0\), \(\xi g(\xi)>0\) if \(\xi\not=0\), \(\lim_{x\to\infty}F(x)=-\infty\) and \(\lim_{x\to-\infty}F(x)=\infty\). The authors study the problem of intersection with the vertical isocline for system \((1)\), which has no state-dependent impulses. Then they investigate the Liénard system with impulses \[ \begin{cases} x'=y-F(x),\quad y'=-g(x),\text{ for }x\not=a_n\text{ and }x\not=-\widetilde a_n,\\ \Delta x=0,\quad\Delta y=-b_n|F(x)|, \text{ for }x=a_n,\\ \Delta x=0,\quad\Delta y=\widetilde b_n|F(x)|, \text{ for }x=-\widetilde a_n, \end{cases}\tag{2} \] where \(\{a_n\}_n\) and \(\{\widetilde{a}_n\}_n\) are positive sequences with \(\lim_{n\to\infty}a_n=\infty\) and \(\lim_{n\to\infty}\widetilde a_n=\infty\), \(\{b_n\}_n\) and \(\{\widetilde b_n\}_n\) are nonnegative sequences, \(\Delta x=x^+-x\), \(\Delta y=y^+-y\), with \(x^+=x(t+0)\) and \(y^+=y(t+0)\) for \(t\) satisfying \(x(t)=a_n\) or \(x(t)=-\widetilde a_n\), respectively. By using the phase plane analysis, the authors study the features of the positive semi-orbits of system \((2)\), including the rotation of all orbits around the origin. This rotation problem is reduced to the intersection problem of all orbits with the vertical isocline. An application to Euler's equations is finally presented.
