    The authors consider functionals \(\mathcal{F} u = \int_{\Omega} F (Du) \, dx\), \(\Omega \subset\mathbb{R}^n\), \(u : \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^m\), with \(F\) non-negative, \(p\) homogeneous with \(p > 1\) and isotropic, i.e., that satisfies \[ F (Q A R) = F(A) \text{ for every } A \in \mathbb{R}^{n \times n} \text{ and } Q, R \in SO (n). \] Denote by \(CO(n)\) the set \(\{t \, Q \, | \, Q \in O(n), t \in \mathbb{R} \}\). Under the above assumptions on \(F\) the authors prove that rank-one convexity for \(F\) implies polyconvexity in \(CO(n)\) for \(F\) if \(p \geqslant n\). If in addition one supposes that \(n = 2\) and the Iwaniec's conjecture is true with \(p \leqslant 2\) than rank-one convexity implies polyconvexity in \(CO(n)\), where the conjecture says that the Burkholder integrand \(B_p : \mathbb{R}^{2 \times 2} \to \mathbb{R}\) is quasiconvex. The authors moreover show the necessity of all conditions in the case \(p \geqslant n\).
