A topological hypergroup \(H\) is a topological space with an involution and convolution product on the space of complex Radon measures \(M(H)\) on \(H\), making it into a Banach \(*\)-algebra. When a left Haar measure exists on \(H\), one could also consider the subalgebra \(L^1(H)\) consisting of integrable complex valued functions on \(H\) with respect to such a left Haar measure, whose linear dual \(L^\infty(H)\) consists of locally measurable functions which are locally essentially bounded. Each element of \(L^\infty(H)\) could be regarded as a bounded multiplication operator from \(L^1(H)\) into \(L^\infty(H)\), and this identification gives an isometric copy of \(L^\infty(H)\) as a Banach space. In the paper under review, the authors consider the strong and weak operator topologies induced on \(L^\infty(H)\) via this identification, and observe that these topologies depend, in an essential way, on the hypergroup structure of \(H\). In prticular, they show that for a compact hypergroup \(H\), \(L^1(H)\) is the dual of \(L^\infty(H)\) in the strong operator topology. They also study almost periodic elements of \(L^\infty(H)\) in the weak operator topology.
