The spaces of the title are twisted sums of two Hilbert spaces and were originally constructed using quasilinear mappings. It was discovered later that they appear naturally as the ``derived spaces'' of suitable interpolation pairs. Although more involved, the interpolation approach provides a better understanding of many properties of Kalton-Peck spaces and related twisted sums; see for example [\textit{M. Cwikel} et al., Adv. Math. 169, No. 2, 241--312 (2002; Zbl 1022.46017)]. However there is a plethora of interpolation methods. Real interpolation methods lead to a real Banach space and complex interpolation methods lead to a complex Banach space, with the relationship between the two not immediately clear. The major achievement of this paper is to show that the complex Kalton-Peck space is in fact the complexification of the real Kalton-Peck space.
