Property (T) for fiber products (Q2154721)

Let \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) be groups which have Property (T). In this paper, the authors study necessary and sufficient conditions for fiber products and semidirect products of \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) to have property (T). In Section 3, the authors give sufficient conditions for fiber products of \(G_1\) and \(G_2\) to have property (T). More precisely, the authors show that if either of surjective group homomorphisms \(G_1 \rightarrow H\) and \(G_2 \rightarrow H\) splits, then \(G_1 \times_H G_2\) has Property (T). This condition is not a necessary condition. Indeed, the authors give some counterexamples. As is shown in Lemma 2.1 of the paper, the special case of a fiber product \(G \times_H G\) with a surjective homomorphism \(G \rightarrow H\) can be considered as the semidirect product \(N \rtimes G\) where \(N\) is the kernel of the homomorphism \(G \rightarrow H\). From this viewpoint, the authors consider necessary and sufficient conditions for semidirect products \(N \rtimes G\) to have Property (T) for a certain classes of groups \(G\) and \(N\) in Section 4. More precisely, the authors deal with the following cases. \begin{itemize} \item[(1)] \(G\) is a locally compact group having Property (T), and \(N\) is a \(\sigma\)-compact and locally compact group. \item[(2)] \(G\) is a topological group having Property (FH), and \(N\) is a topological group. \item[(3)] \(G\) is a locally compact group having Property (T), and \(N\) is a second countable locally compact abelian group. \end{itemize} In Section 5, the authors study whether \(N \rtimes G\) has Property (T) for a group \(G\) having Property (T) and a finitely generated abelian group \(N\).
