Arithmetic quotients of the mapping class group (Q897000)

From the introduction: ``Let \(\Sigma = \Sigma_{g}\) be a closed surface of genus \(g > 1\) and \( Mod(\Sigma)\) the mapping class group of \(\Sigma,\) which is the group of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of \(\Sigma\) modulo those isotopic to the identity. It is well-known that there is an epimorphism from \( Mod(\Sigma)\) onto the arithmetic group \(Sp(2g, \mathbb Z).\) The purpose of this paper is to show that many more arithmetic groups are quotients of \( Mod(\Sigma).\)'' The authors give many new arithmetic quotients of \( Mod(\Sigma)\) which are defined over various (subfields of) cyclotomic fields and are of type \(Sp(2m),\) \(SO(2m,2m)\) and \(SU(m,m),\) for arbitrarily large \(m\).
