Let \(A\) be a commutative unital Fréchet algebra. For an ideal \(M\subset A,\) denote by \(M^n\) the ideal generated by products of \(n\) elements in \(M.\) The spectrum \(M(A)\) of \(A\) has an \textit{analytic variety} at an element \(\phi\in M(A)\) if there is a subvariety \(D, 0\in D,\) of a domain in some \(\mathbb{C}^k\) and a continuous injection \(f:D\to M(A)\) such that \(f(0)=\phi\) and such that \(\hat{x}\circ f \in H(D)\) for every \(x\in A.\) The paper main result is: Suppose that a maximal ideal \(M\) of a commutative unital Fréchet algebra \(A:=\mathrm{proj}_m(A_m,d_m)\) is finitely generated by, say, \(\{t_1, \dots, t_k\},\) and that for every \(n\in \mathbb{N},\) the \(n\)-homogeneous monomials of degree \(n\) in \(\{t_1, \dots, t_k\}\) are representatives of a basis for the quotient \(\overline{M^n}/\overline{M^{n+1}}\), and that for every \(i=1, \dots, k,\) \(d_m(t_i)\) is not a topological divisor of \(0\) in the Banach algebra \(A_m\) for \(m\) big enough. Then \begin{itemize} \item \(A/\bigcap_n\overline{M^n}\) is a semi-simple Fréchet algebra of power series over \(k\) commuting indeterminates. \item There is an analytic variety at \(\phi\), where \(M=\ker \phi\). \item For each \(x\in \bigcap_n\overline{M^n},\) its Gelfand transform \(\hat{x}\) vanishes on a neighborhood of \(\phi\). \end{itemize} As a consequence of this and other proved results, the author answers affirmatively the Gleason problem for locally Stein algebras: If \(A\) is a semi-simple locally Stein algebra and \(M\subset A\) is the kernel of some \(\phi\in M(A),\) then \(M\) is finitely generated. Thus many of the classical positive results for the Gleason problem in several complex variables are recovered. The author also asks for the Gleason problem in the infinite dimensional case; work on such matter has been done by \textit{P. Galindo} [J. Geom. Anal. 25, No. 1, 255--268 (2015; Zbl 1316.46042)].
