In the theory of automorphic forms, it is an interesting problem to compare the Petersson norm of a given form to that of a lift. For example, let \(f\) be a Hecke eigencusp form of weight \(2k\) on \(\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\), and let \(I_f\) be the Saito-Kurokawa lift of \(f\), which is a Siegel modular form of degree 2 and weight \(k+1\) (even). Then \textit{M. Furusawa} [Math. Ann. 267, 543--548 (1984; Zbl 0519.10020)] showed that the ratio between the norm of \(I_f\) and the norm of \(f\) belongs to the number field \(K_f\) generated by the Fourier coefficients of \(f\). \textit{Y. Choie} and \textit{W. Kohnen} [Ramanujan J. 7, No. 1--3, 45--48 (2003; Zbl 1047.11038)] proved a similar result for the Duke-Imamoglu-Ikeda lift of \(f\), which is a Siegel modular form of degree \(2n\) and weight \(k+n\), with \(n \geq 1\). In this situation, \textit{H. Katsurada} and \textit{H.-A. Kawamura} [Proc. Lond. Math. Soc. (3) 111, No. 2, 445--483 (2015; Zbl 1376.11038)] established a refined formula for this ratio involving the symmetric square \(L\)-function of \(f\), thereby proving a conjecture of \textit{T. Ikeda} [Duke Math. J. 131, No. 3, 469--497 (2006; Zbl 1112.11022)]. In this article, the authors obtain a similar formula for an Ikeda type lift \(F_f\) of \(f\) associated to the exceptional arithmetic group of type \(E_{7,3}\). The lift \(F_f\) was constructed by \textit{H. H. Kim} and \textit{T. Yamauchi} [Compos. Math. 152, No. 2, 223--254 (2016; Zbl 1337.11031)]. The authors prove in the present article that \[ \langle F_f, F_f \rangle = \frac{(2k-1)! (2k-5)! (2k-9)! 691}{2^{12k-7} \cdot 3^3 \cdot 5 \cdot 7^2 \cdot 13} \prod_{i=1}^3 L(4i-3, \mathrm{Sym}^2 \pi_f). \] This implies that the ratio \(\langle F_f, F_f \rangle / \langle f,f \rangle^3\) belongs to the Hecke field \(K_f\). As in the work of Katsurada and Kawamura [loc. cit.], the proof is based on the Rankin-Selberg method.
