The Temperley-Lieb algebra of type D, \(\mathrm{TLD}_n(\delta)\), where \(\delta\) is a parameter in the base ring \(R\), is a finite dimensional \(R\)-algebra generated by \(e_i\), \(i \in \{\bar{1},1,\dots,n\}\), with the relations \(e_i^2 = \delta e_i\), \(e_i e_j = e_j e_i\) if \(i,j\) are not connected in the Dynkin diagram of type \(D_n\) standardly labelled by the indices, and \(e_ie_je_i = e_i\) if \(i,j\) are connected. A diagrammatic description is provided by viewing the basis elements as decorated parenthesis diagrams, which this paper studies in detail. From this description one concludes that the algebra is quasi-hereditary unless \(\delta = 0\). Finding an ordering of the base elements leads to a cellular structure, which has an associated Gram matrix. It is known that the algebra is semisimple if and only if its Gram matrix is invertible. This leads to the main result: if \(R\) is a field of characteristic not \(2\) and \(n \geq 4\), then \(\mathrm{TLD}_n(\delta)\) is semisimple if and only if \(\delta\) is not a root of the first \(n\) Chebichev polynomials of the second kind and the first \(n\) Chebichev polynomials of type \(D\) (the latter are being defined in the paper).
