Gentle algebras are a special class of quadratic algebras that arise as path algebras of quivers with special relations and properties. The representation theory of this class of algebras has been studied in depth since its appearance in [\textit{I. Assem} and \textit{A. Skowroński}, Math. Z. 195, 269--290 (1987; Zbl 0601.16022)]. Nowadays, this kind of algebras is usually studied by means of geometric models. In particular, the results in this paper rely heavily on the methods described in [\textit{K. Baur} and \textit{R. Coelho Simões}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2021, No. 15, 11357--11392 (2021; Zbl 1491.16014)], [\textit{S. Opper}, \textit{P.-G. Plamondon}, and \textit{S. Schroll}, preprint (2018; arXiv 1801.09659)] and [\textit{Y. Palu} et al., J. Comb. Algebra 3, No. 4, 401--438 (2019; Zbl 1433.05322)]. Recall that higher homological algebra is the study of \(d\)-abelian and \((d+2)\)-angulated categories, among others (see [\textit{M. Herschend} et al., J. Algebra 570, 531--586 (2021; Zbl 1506.18015)]). This type of categories usually appear embedded in categories of modules, or in the bounded derived category of module categories, in the form of a \(d\)-cluster tilting subcategory (see [\textit{S. Kvamme}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 226, No. 4, Article ID 106862, 27 p. (2022; Zbl 1479.18005)] and [\textit{C. Geiss} et al., J. Reine Angew. Math. 675, 101--120 (2013; Zbl 1271.18013)]). The aim of the article under review is to characterize the gentle algebras \(A\) which admit a \(d\)-cluster tilting subcategory in the category of modules \(\operatorname{mod}(A)\), or in the derived category \(D^{b}(A)\), and to give a characterisation of these subcategories. The main results of the paper tell us, first, that any gentle category \(A\) which admits a \(d\)-cluster-tilting subcategory in \(\operatorname{mod}(A)\) is a radical square zero Nakayama algebra; and second, that any gentle algebra which admits a \(d\)-cluster-tilting subcategory in \(D^{b}(A)\) is derived equivalent to an algebra of Dynkin type A.
