Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be Banach spaces and let \(\mathcal{B}(X,Y)\) denote the space of all bounded linear operators from \(X\) into \(Y\). The distance from an operator \(T \in\mathcal{B}(X,Y)\) to non-invertibility is measured as the infimum of \(\| S \|\) over all \(S\in \mathcal{B}(X,Y)\) such that \(T+S\) is not invertible. It is well known that this equals \(\frac{1}{\| T^{-1}\|}\) whenever \(T\) is invertible. Analogous definitions hold for distance to non-right-invertibility or non-left-invertibility of operators. The authors, among other things, derive formulae and bounds for structured distance to non-invertibility (respectively, non-left, non-right invertibility) of an invertible (respectively, left, right invertible) operator on Banach spaces. Some special cases are considered.
