A reaction-diffusion system for five unknown variables on an interval, with time-periodic forcing, is studied. This is, so-called, the Droop model either for one species or competition of two species for a nutrient in a chemostat. The conditions for either persistence or extinction of the species are derived through the analysis of the associated nonautonomous eigenvalue problem. The existence of a periodic solution describing coexistence of two species is also shown.
