The author proves that for any pseudoconvex Runge domain \(\Omega\subset \mathbb C^2\), any open Riemann surface \(M\), any closed discrete subset \(E\subset M\), and any proper injective map \(f\colon E\to \Omega\) there is a Runge domain \(D\subset M\), which is a deformation retract of \(M\), such that the map \(f\) extends to \(D\) as a proper holomorphic embedding into \(\Omega\). \textit{F. Forstneric} et al. [Math. Ann. 305, No. 3, 559--569 (1996; Zbl 0859.32010)] proved the result in the case \(M\) is the open unit disc in \(\mathbb C\). The proof relies on the Mergelyan approximation theorem for holomorphic functions and on the theory of holomorphic automorphisms of complex Euclidean spaces.
