In this paper an optimal control problem for a semilinear wave equation with the exponent \(5\) in the power-low nonlinearity is investigated. The value \(5\) is a critical one because it satisfies \(5 = \frac{n+2}{n-1}\) for \(n=3\) being the space dimension. The critical wave equation is considered on a bounded domain with smooth boundary in three dimensions over a finite interval \((0,T)\). The aim of control is to find an admissible control such that the optimal state at time \(T\) is close to the given terminal state and some performance index is minimized. The authors prove existence of globally optimal solutions to the considered optimal control problem. Futher, they derive necessary optimality conditions of the first- and the second order as well as the second order sufficient ones. Also, some nonsmooth regularization in the considered problem is used.
