The authors study proper CAT(0) cube complexes admitting a proper cocompact action by a group \(G\). If \(K\) is such a complex, then a factor system is a set of subcomplexes of \(K\) satisfying certain conditions. The main theorem states that if a group \(G\) acts properly and cocompactly on a proper CAT(0) cube complex \(K\) and if one of three conditions is satisfied, then a certain set of subcomplexes of \(K\) is a factor system. This implies that \(K\) is a hierarchically hyperbolic space and \(G\) a hierarchically hyperbolic group.
