The authors find explicit upper bounds on coefficients of Jacobi and Gegenbauer expansions for functions of bounded variation and for functions of limited regularity at endpoints or interior points. The results are applied to estimate the order of approximation by the related expansions. They obtain also the following bound for Jacobi polynomials (Theorem 4): Let \( q=\max\{\alpha,\beta\} \) and \( \kappa =\min\{\alpha,\beta\}\geq 0. \) Then \[ \Vert (1-x)^{\alpha}(1+x)^{\beta}P_n^{(\alpha,\beta)}(x)\Vert_{L^{\infty}[-1,1]}= \begin{cases} O(n^{-\kappa}),& 0\leq\kappa <\frac{1}{2},\\ 2^q\left(\frac{\pi}{2}\right)^{\kappa -1}n^{-\frac{1}{2}}+o(n^{-\frac{1}{2}}),&\kappa\geq \frac{1}{2}. \end{cases} \]
