In [\textit{M. Auslander} et al., Representation theory of Artin algebras. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press (1995; Zbl 0834.16001)] and [\textit{C. M. Ringel}, Ill. J. Math. 56, No. 3, 981--1000 (2012; Zbl 1288.16012)] it was proved that the category mod\(A\) of finitely generated modules over an Artinian algebra \(A\) has determined morphisms. In [\textit{H. Krause}, in: Algebras, quivers and representations. Heidelberg: Springer. 195--207 (2013)], this result was extended to dualizing \(k\)-varieties for a commutative Artinian ring \(k\). Chen and Le proved that in a Hom-finite abelian category having Serre duality, a morphism is right determined by some object if and only if it is an epimorphism. They also gave a characterization to abelian categories having Serre duality via determined morphisms, see [\textit{X.-W. Chen} and \textit{J. Le}, J. Algebra 428, 138--148 (2015; Zbl 1321.18001)]. Later, these results were extended to the exact categories, see [\textit{P. Jiao} and \textit{J. Le}, J. Pure Appl. Algebra 222, No. 4, 807--817 (2018; Zbl 1386.18038)]. The extriangulated category, introduced by \textit{H. Nakaoka} and \textit{Y. Palu} [``Mutation via Hovey twin cotorsion pairs and model structures in extriangulated categories'', Cah. Topol. Géom. Différ. Catég. LX, No. 2, 117--193 (2019)], is a simultaneous generalization of exact category and triangulated category. The present paper unifies some arguments on morphisms determined by objects in exact and triangulated categories and then, gives equivalent characterizations on the existence of almost split sequence in extriangulated categories. In details, the authors assume that (\(\mathfrak{C}\), \(\mathbb{E}\), \(\mathfrak{s}\)) is an Ext-finite, Krull-Schmidt and \(k\)-linear extriangulated category with \(k\) a commutative artinian ring. They introduce an additive subcategory \(\mathfrak{C}_{r}\) (respectively, \(\mathfrak{C}_{l}\)) of \(\mathfrak{C}\) in terms of the representable functors from the stable category of \(\mathfrak{C}\) modulo \(\mathfrak{s}\)-injectives (respectively, \(\mathfrak{s}\)-projectives) to the category of \(k\)-modules. Under the weak idempotent completeness (for short, WIC Condition) conditions, they prove beautiful equivalent characterizations for \(\mathfrak{C}_{r}\): for any non-\(\mathfrak{s}\)-projective and indecomposable object \(C\) in \(\mathfrak{C}\), (1) \(C\in\mathfrak{C}_{r}\); (2) For each object \(Y\) and each right End\(_{\mathfrak{C}}(C)\)-submodule \(H\) of \(\mathfrak{C}(C, Y)\) satisfying \(\mathcal{P}(C, Y)\subseteq H\), there exists a right \(C\)-determined \(\mathfrak{s}\)-deflation \(\alpha:X\rightarrow Y\) such that \(H=\)Im\(\mathfrak{C}(C, \alpha)\); (3) \(C\) is an intrinsic weak cokernel of some \(\mathfrak{s}\)-inflation \(\alpha:X\rightarrow Y\) which is left \(K\)-determined for some object \(K\). There exists an almost split \(\mathfrak{s}\)-triangle ending at \(C\); (4) There exists a non-retraction \(\mathfrak{s}\)-deflation which is right \(C\)-determined; (5) There exists an \(\mathfrak{s}\)-deflation \(\alpha:X\rightarrow Y\) and a morphism \(f:C\rightarrow Y\) such that \(f\) almost factors through \(\alpha\).
