A singularity is a germ \((X,x)\), where \(X\) is a normal algebraic variety and \(x \in X\) is a distinguished singular point. In the paper under review, the authors present the full classification of canonical threefold singularities with an effective two-torus action and Gorenstein index \(\iota \geq 2\). This result can be seen as an extension of the classification work on terminal threefold singularities provided by \textit{S. Mori} [Nagoya Math. J. 98, 43--66 (1985; Zbl 0589.14005)] and on toric canonical threefold singularities provided by \textit{M.-N. Ishida} and \textit{N. Iwashita} [Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 8, 135--151 (1987; Zbl 0627.14002)]. The classification itself is based on the observation that the singularities under consideration are either toric or can be assumed to be quasicones. As a consequence, they admit a finitely generated Cox ring, which in turn gives rise to combinatorial methods. In particular, canonicity of the singularities can be expressed in terms of lattice points in certain rational polytopes provided by the anticanonical complex. The classification of these polytopes is performed using i.a. Farey sequences. As an application, the authors present the full Cox ring iteration tree of the classified varieties.
