Let \(A,B\) and \(T\) be bounded linear operators on a Hilbert space \(H\). An operator \(T\) is said to be essentially isometric if \(I-T^*T\) is compact. Assume that \(A\) and \(B^*\) are essentially isometric operators such that \(\|A^nx\|\to 0\) and \(\|(B^*)^nx\|\to 0\) for all \(x\in H\). The first main result says that the sequence \(\{A^nTB^n\}\) is convergent in the norm if and only if \(T\) can be written as \(T=T_0+K\) with \(T_0\) satisfying \(AT_0B=T_0\) and a compact operator \(K\). The second main result says that, under the additional assumption that \(ATB-T\) is compact, the sequence \(\{\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n-1}A^iTB^i\}\) converges in the norm if and only if \(T\) can be written as \(T=T_0+K\) with \(T_0\) and \(K\) as above. These results are applied to Toeplitz, composition, and model operators.
