Let \(\mathcal{B}(X,Y)\) be the space of bounded linear operators from a Banach space \(X\) to a Banach space \(Y\). One says that operators \(U\in\mathcal{B}(X,X)\) and \(V\in\mathcal{B}(Y,Y)\) are equivalent after extension (EAE) if there exist Banach spaces \(X_0\) and \(Y_0\) and invertible operators \(E\in\mathcal{B}(Y\oplus Y_0,X\oplus X_0)\) and \(F\in\mathcal{B}(X\oplus X_0,Y\oplus Y_0)\) so that \[\left[\begin{array}{cc} U & 0 \\ 0 & I_{X_0}\end{array}\right]=E\left[\begin{array}{cc} V & 0 \\ 0 & I_{Y_0}\end{array}\right]F.\] The operators \(U\in\mathcal{B}(X,X)\) and \(V\in\mathcal{B}(Y,Y)\) are said to be Schur coupled (SC) if there exists an operator \[\left[\begin{array}{cc} A & B \\ C & D \end{array}\right]\in\mathcal{B}(X\oplus Y, X\oplus Y)\] so that \(A\) and \(D\) are invertible and \(U=A-BD^{-1}C\), \(V=D-CA^{-1}B\). The authors investigate the question whether EAE of \(U\) and \(V\) implies SC of \(U\) and \(V\) for the class of relatively regular operators, that is, operators which have complemented kernels and ranges. New cases where EAE and SC coincide are found, as well as, new examples for which EAE and SC do not coincide are constructed.
