The authors study the inverse problem of recovering a source embedded within an inhomogeneous medium by knowledge of the field generated by the source outside the medium. They provide a survey of recent results on these type of inverse problems, as well as some of the techniques involved, such as the method of layer potentials and the Lippmann-Schwinger equation. Applications to thermoacoustic and photoacoustic tomography are also discussed. Emphasis is placed on the fact that low frequency measurements are key in obtaining uniqueness.
