This article is part of a project that aims to investigate the essential 2-rank of finite groups (for a precise definition see the text). \textit{L. Puig} [J. Algebra 303, No. 1, 309--357 (2006; Zbl 1110.20011)] considered the essential rank of finite groups of Lie type in defining characteristic. \textit{J. An} and \textit{H. Dietrich} determined the essential rank of the Frobenius category on \(r\)-subgroups of symmetric groups in [Int. J. Algebra Comput. 22, No. 1, 1250002, 15 p. (2012; Zbl 1260.20014)], and then considered sporadic simple groups in [J. Algebra 356, No. 1, 325--354 (2012; Zbl 1295.20011)]. Let \(G\) be a general linear or a unitary group over a finite field of odd characteristic and let \(D\) be a Sylow 2-subgroup of \(G\). In the paper under review, the authors classify essential subgroups of the Frobenius category \(\mathcal{F}_{D}(G)\) and determine the number of \(G\)-conjugacy classes of these subgroups, that is, the essential 2-rank of \(\mathcal{F}_{D}(G)\).
