Let \(G\) be a finite \(\pi\)-separable group, where \(\pi\) is a set of primes. In this situation, \textit{I. M. Isaacs} [J. Algebra 86, 98--128 (1984; Zbl 0526.20006)] defined subsets \(\mathrm{B}_{\pi}(G)\) and \(\mathrm{B}_{\pi'}(G)\) of the set \(\operatorname{Irr}(G)\) of irreducible characters of \(G\). In general, the set \(\mathrm{B}_{\pi}(G) \cup \mathrm{B}_{\pi'}(G)\) is smaller than \(\operatorname{Irr}(G)\). In the paper under review, variants of theorems of Ito-Michler and of Thompson on charagter degrees are proved, where \(\operatorname{Irr} G\) is replaced by \(\mathrm{B}_{\pi}(G)\cup \mathrm{B}_{\pi'}(G)\). For example, when \(p\) is a prime and \(p\) does not divide the degree of any character in \(\mathrm{B}_{\pi}(G)\cup \mathrm{B}_{\pi'}(G)\) (where \(G\) is a \(\pi\)-separable group), then \(G\) is shown to have a normal abelian Sylow \(p\)-subgroup. This strengthens the Ito-Michler theorem in the case of \(\pi\)-separable groups. (For a survey of other variations on the theorems of Ito-Michler and Thompson, see [\textit{G. Navarro}, Rocky Mt. J. Math. 46, No. 4, 1363--1377 (2016; Zbl 1397.20017)].)
