The authors investigate the 5-class field tower of cyclic quartic fields \(M=\mathbb Q((\zeta_5-\zeta_5^{-1}) \sqrt d)\), where \(1 \ne d\) is a square-free integer not divisible by \(5\). By the quintic reflection theorem these fields are connected with the quadratic fields \(\mathbb Q(\sqrt d)\) and \(\mathbb Q(\sqrt{5d})\). Let \(M_5^{(2)}\) denote the second Hilbert 5-class field of \(M\) and \(G_5^{(2)}\) the Galois group of \(M_5^{(2)}/M\). Supposing that the 5-class group of \(M\) is elementary abelian of type \((5,5)\) and taking into account the action of \(\text{Gal}(M/\mathbb Q)\), one obtains conditions for the possible isomophism types of \(G_5^{(2)}\). Further constraints come from (the Galois theory of) the intermediate fields, which leads to the main results of the authors in Section 4. In Section 5, the authors present numerical results for all relevant cases with \(-175000 < d < 10000\).
