Let \(U/\mathbb Q\) be a linear algebraic group of rank one such that the group of real points is the unitary group \(U(n,1)\). This is an interesting example from the viewpoint of automorphic forms, as for \(n\ge 3\) this group is not quasi-split. Let \(H^*(U,{\mathbb C})\) denote the inductive limit of de Rham cohomology groups \[ H^*(U,{\mathbb C})=\lim_{K_f}H^*_{\mathrm{dR}}\big(U({\mathbb Q})\backslash U({\mathbb A})/K_\infty K_f,{\mathbb C}\big), \] where the limit runs over all open compact subgroups \(K_f\) of \(U({\mathbb A}_f)\). Here \({\mathbb A}_f\) is the ring of finite adeles and \(K_\infty\) a maximal compact subgroup of \(U(n,1)\). The group \(H^*(U,{\mathbb C})\) captures information on automorphic forms which are related to the Langlands correspondence. This cohomology inherits the decomposition of automorphic forms into cuspidal and Eisenstein part. The present paper is concerned with the part of the cohomology induced by poles and zeros of Eisenstein series. It is shown, that if the Archimedean factors of an automorphic representation are tempered, then the poles of the Eisenstein series coincide with pole of certain normalising factors of automorphic \(L\)-functions. Other results include domains of holomorphy for Eisenstein series and the explicit computation of the contribution to the cohomology of the pole at \(n/2\), whose structire as an \(U({\mathbb A}_f)\)-module is determined.
