In the introduction of this paper one has a very nice ``state of art'' on the subject. It also presents relevant answers to questions that people had when they once worked on this topic. The main purpose of this article is to make clear the relationship between the homology \(L\)-classes \( L_{i}(X) \in H_{i}(X; \mathbb{Q}) \cong Hom(H^{i}(X, \mathbb(Q)), \mathbb{R}),\) firstly defined by \textit{M. Goresky} and \textit{R. MacPherson} for Witt spaces \(X\) in [Topology 19, 135--165 (1980; Zbl 0448.55004)] and the Hodge theoretic Hirzebruch type characteristic classes \(IT_{{1*}}\), defined by \textit{J.-P. Brasselet} et al. [J. Topol. Anal. 2, No. 1, 1--55 (2010; Zbl 1190.14009)], in particular that the latter transform under Gysin restrictions associated to normally nonsingular embeddings of singular spaces in the same manner as the Goresky-MacPherson \(L\)-class. Given \(g : Y \hookrightarrow X\) a normally nonsingular inclusion, in ordinary homology, one has a Gysin homomorphism \(g^{{!}}\). The author presents a result for \(Y\) and \(X\) closed even-dimensional piecewise-linear Witt pseudomanifolds (for example projective complex algebraic varieties) as follows: Let us consider \(\nu\) the topological normal bundle of \(g\). Then \(g^{!}L_{*}(X) = L^{*}(\nu) \cap L_{*}(Y)\). For the \(IT_{1*}\) classes the notion of upward normal nonsingularity is defined and the following result is presented: Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be pure-dimensional compact complex algebraic varieties and let \(g : Y \hookrightarrow X\) be an upwardly normally nonsingular embedding. Consider \(N = N_{Y}X\) the algebraic normal bundle of \(g\) and denote by \(\nu\) the topological normal bundle of the topologically normally nonsingular inclusion underlying \(g\). Then \(g^{!}IT_{1*}(X) = L^{*}(N) \cap IT_{1*}(Y ) = L^{*}(\nu) \cap IT_{1*}(Y )\). Then the author concludes: ``Viewed in conjunction, our Gysin theorems may be interpreted as further evidence towards a conjectural equality \(IT_{1*}= L_{*}\)''.
