This work presents conversion formulas between the generators \(v_i\) of \(\pi_* (BP)\) and \(\lambda_i\) of \(H_*(BP)\), where \(BP\) is the Brown-Peterson spectrum. The \(v_i\) can be thought of as Hazewinkel or Araki generators, and are defined recursively by \(q_n \lambda_n = v_n + \lambda_1 v_{n-1}^p + \cdots + \lambda_{n-1}v_1^{p^{n-1}}\), where \(q_n\) is \(p\) if one considers Hazewinkel generators and \(p - p^{p^n}\) if one considers Araki generators. The conversion formulas are given in both directions. Theorem 2.1 expresses monomials \(v^T = v_1^{t_1} v_2^{t_2} \cdots v_n^{t_n}\) in terms of corresponding monomials for the \(\lambda_i\). Its proof is combinatorial, and involves a successive application of the multinomial expansion for the weighed power of a sum to the above recursive relations defining the \(v_i\). The same method is used in Theorem 2.2, expressing monomials in the \(\lambda_i\) in terms of monomials in the \(v_i\), and the multinomial expansion comes from first altering the mentioned recursive relations for the \(v_i\). A special case of Theorem 2.2 gives the known formulas of \textit{D. C. Ravenel} [Complex cobordism and stable homotopy groups of spheres. Pure and Applied Mathematics, Vol. 121. Orlando etc.: Academic Press, Inc. (Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Publishers). (1986; Zbl 0608.55001)] and of \textit{M. Hazewinkel} [Formal groups and applications. Pure and Applied Mathematics. 78. New York-San Francisco-London: Academic Press. (1978; Zbl 0454.14020)] that express each \(\lambda_n\) in terms of monomials in the \(v_i\). This appears as Corollary 2.3 in this paper. Using the deduced conversion formulas, the author obtains a description of the right unit of the Hopf algebroid \(BP_* BP\) (Theorem 2.4) and of the Brown-Peterson operations \(r_E\) (Corollary 2.5). The last chapter presents extensive examples using the conversion formulas.
