Whenever a certain property of a mathematical object has a certain interest, some authors attempt to ``quantify the lack of this property'' by introducing a characteristic which measures how far the object is from having the desired property. The best known example in functional analysis and operator theory is probably the (Kuratowski or Hausdorff) measure of noncompactness for sets and operators which turned out of utmost importance, e.g., in fixed point theory. Building on this idea, a series of papers with the title ``A quantitative version of~\dots'' have been published in the last decades. As sample examples, let us mention that this was done for Krejn's theorem on weak compactness by \textit{M. Fabian} et al. [Rev. Mat. Iberoam. 21, No. 1, 237--248 (2005; Zbl 1083.46012)], for James's compactness theorem by \textit{B. Cascales} et al. [Proc. Edinb. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 55, No. 2, 369--386 (2012; Zbl 1255.46009)], for Valvidia's theorem on weak compactness by \textit{P. J. Paúl} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 456, No. 2, 1517--1520 (2017; Zbl 1398.46017)], and by the present author for the Arzelà-Ascoli compactness criterion [Appl. Gen. Topol. 20, No. 1, 265--279 (2019; Zbl 1423.46032)] and Helly's selection principle [Ann. Funct. Anal. 11, No. 4, 1220--1235 (2020; Zbl 1453.46007)]. In this paper, the author develops a parallel result for the well-known Kolmogorov-Riesz compactness criterion in the space of Banach space valued \(L^p\)-functions on \([0,1]\). To this end, he recalls the notion of so-called \(\alpha\)-dense curve in a bounded subset of a Banach space, introduced by \textit{G. Mora} and \textit{Y. Cherruault} [Comput. Math. Appl. 33, No. 9, 83--91 (1997; Zbl 0893.90177)], as well as the degree of nondensifiability of a bounded set due to \textit{G. Mora} and the author [J. Convex Anal. 22, No. 3, 871--888 (2015; Zbl 1328.47057)], which gives, roughly speaking, the smallest \(\alpha>0\) such that there exists an \(\alpha\)-dense curve in the set. The paper is quite technical, but the results are certainly interesting. It would be useful to prove a similar result for the Kolmogorov-Riesz compactness criterion in the sequence space~\(\ell^p\).
