This work is a substantial contribution to the representation theory of a Leavitt path algebra \(L_K(E)\) of a directed graph \(E\) over a field \(K.\) The authors give a specific description of certain irreducible representations of \(L_K(E),\) referred to as special irreducible representations. The authors' treatment relates the approaches of \textit{X.-W. Chen} [Forum Math. 27, No. 1, 549--574 (2015; Zbl 1332.16006)] and of \textit{P. Ara} and \textit{K. M. Rangaswamy} [J. Algebra 417, 333--352 (2014; Zbl 1304.16002)]. The authors deduce some relevant properties of special irreducible representations -- they display criteria for when such representations, considered as modules called special modules, are finitely presented or finite dimensional and describe their endomorphism rings. The authors also characterize primitive annihilator ideals of special simple modules. In the last section, the authors consider special simple modules as modules over the commutative subalgebra \(A\) generated by commuting idempotent paths. They show that a simple \(L_K(E)\)-module \(S\) is special if and only if \(S\) is semisimple as an \(A\)-module. Consequently, a semisimple \(L_K(E)\)-module \(M\) is a direct sum of special simple modules if and only if \(M\) is semisimple as a module over \(A.\)
