Taking into account of spatial spread, limited medical resources for treatment, and treatment strategies depending a threshold (for having general treatment or intensive treatment), the authors proposed a hand-foot-mouth disease model with saturated treatment. The model is described by a system of reaction-diffusion equations with homogeneous Newman boundary conditions. Firstly, the well-posedness of the system is studied. Followed is the existence of equilibria. Then bifurcation analysis is carried out for the corresponding non-spatial system. The main results are on the stability and bifurcation analysis for the spatial system. There is Turing instability. The system can undergo homogeneous and inhomogeneous Hopf bifurcations. The theoretical results are supported with numerical simulations and are applied to fit a situation in Guangxi Province, China. They effects of various factors like the threshold for intensive treatment, transmission rate, limited medical resource, and diffusion rate have also been investigated. It is found that reducing the threshold for intensive treatment and narrowing the range of activities of infectious individuals can effectively control the spread of hand-foot-mouth disease.
