The paper concerns the displacement problem of inhomogeneous elastostatics in a two-dimensional exterior Lipschitz domain. The main result states that this problem has a unique solution with finite Dirichlet integral and vanishing uniformly at infinity if and only if the boundary data satisfies a suitable compatibility condition (known as the Stokes paradox). Moreover, the sharp condition \(\boldsymbol{u}=o(\log r)\) insures uniqueness and uniform decay at infinity. In particular, if elasticities tend to a constant Hooke tensor at infinity, then \(\boldsymbol{u}=O(r^{-\alpha})\) for every \(\alpha <1.\)
