The spectral theory of invariant differential operators on Riemannian locally symmetric spaces is a well-developed topic. In the last years, the authors of the present note have made several contributions to the study of such operators acting in the more general context of pseudo-Riemannian locally symmetric spaces, that is quotients of \(G/H\) where \(G \supset H\) are reductive groups (for instance \(\mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb R) / \mathrm{SO}(p, n-p)\)) by groups acting freely and properly discontinuously. See, for example, [\textit{F. Kassel} and \textit{T. Kobayashi}, Adv. Math. 287, 123--236 (2016; Zbl 1333.53073)]. This paper is an announcement of further results of theirs on the subject. For example, they prove, for a wide family of examples, analogues of classical results in elliptic operator theory (essential self-adjointness, regularity of eigenfunctions), and that there is an infinite discrete spectrum.
