The authors provide a new characterization of Carleson measures in terms of the \(L^p(\mathbb S_n)\) norms of certain functions in admissible approach regions of the unit ball of \(\mathbb C^n\), namely, \(\mathcal A_\mu(a,\tau,s,p)=\| \int_{\Gamma(\xi)}\frac{(1-|a|^2)^{n\tau}}{|1-\langle a,z\rangle|^{n(\tau+ s)}}\frac{d\mu(z)}{(1-|z|)^n}\|_{L^p(\mathbb S_n)}\) where \(\Gamma(\xi)=\{z\in \mathbb B_n: |1-\langle z,\xi\rangle|<1-|z|^2\}\). Of course, due to the Fubini theorem, \(s\)-Carleson measures \(\mu\), i.e., \(\mu(S(Q))\le C(\sigma(Q))^s\) for any Carleson block and \(d\)-ball \(Q\), are characterized by the condition \(\sup_{a\in \mathbb B_n} \mathcal A_\mu(a,\tau,s,1)<\infty\). The main result establishes that, if \(s\ge1\), \(0<p<\infty\), then a non-negative measure \(\mu\) defined on \(\mathbb B_n\) is \(s\)-Carleson if and only if \(\sup_{a\in \mathbb B_n} \mathcal A_\mu(a,\tau,s-1+\frac{1}{p},p)<\infty\). This generalization to \(p\ne 1\) has different applications. Another equivalent formulation, already considered for dimension~1 by \textit{Z.-J. Wu} [Integral Equations Oper. Theory 71, No. 2, 161--180 (2011; Zbl 1248.47036)], arises with the use of \(\mathcal M_\mu(E,p)=\|\int_{\Gamma(\xi)\cap E}\frac{d\mu(z)}{(1-|z|)^n}\|_{L^p(\mathbb S_n)}\) for any \(E\subseteq \mathbb B_n\). It is shown that \(s\)-Carleson measures are also given by the condition \(\mathcal M_\mu(S(Q),p)\le C (\sigma(Q))^{s-1+\frac{1}{p}}\) for all \(d\)-ball \(Q\) in \(\mathbb S_n\). The natural replacements using little on conditions are presented in the case of vanishing \(s\)-Carleson measures. Some partial results for \(0<s<1\) are also achieved. Applications to the study of Riemann-Stieltjes integral operators on the unit ball given by \(J_g(f)(z)= \int_{0}^1f(tz)Rg(tz)\frac{dt}{t}\) where \(Rg\) denotes the radial derivative are presented. In particular, their result is used to get a new description of the boundedness from \(H^p\) into \(H^q\) on the unit ball previously obtained by \textit{J. Pau} [J. Funct. Anal. 270, No. 1, 134--176 (2016; Zbl 1336.32005)].
