A set \(Y\subset C_p(X)\) is uniformly dense in \(C_p(X)\) if it is dense in the uniform topology on \(C(X)\). Every uniformly dense subspace of \(C_p(X)\) is of countable extent if and only if \(C_p(X)\) has countable spread. If \(X\) is Lindelöf and zero-dimensional then \(C_p(X)\) has a uniformly dense Lindelöf subspace if and only if \(C_p(X,\mathbb Z)\) is Lindelöf. Under MA+CH if \(X\) is compact and \(C_p(X)\) has a uniformly dense Lindelöf subspace then \(X\) is \(\omega\)-monolithic. An example is described of a scattered, separable, zero-dimensional, \(\sigma\)-compact space \(X\) such that \(C_p(X)\) is not Lindelöf but has a uniformly dense Lindelöf subspace.
