Let \(X\) be a Tychonoff space and \(C_p(X)\) the set of all real-valued continuous functions on \(X\) equipped with the pointwise convergence topology. In the paper under review, the author proves that \(C_p(X)\) has a uniformly dense subspace that condenses onto a second countable space if and only if \(C_p(X)\) has cardinality of the continuum. This result solves Problem 3.5 of \textit{V. V. Tkachuk} [Topology Appl. 132, No. 2, 183--193 (2003; Zbl 1121.54034)]. He also proves that: if \(X\) is a non-discrete functionally perfect space, then there exists a countable disjoint family of compact subspaces of \(C_p(X)\) whose union is dense in \(C_p(X)\); as a consequence the space \(C_p(X)\) has a dense \(F_{\sigma}\)-metrizable subspace when \(X\) is metrizable or Eberlein compact. It is also proved that if \(X\) is a Corson compact space or \(C_p(X)\) is a Lindelöf \(\Sigma \)-space, then \(C_p(X)\) has a dense subspace with countable pseudocharacter.
