In [Sib. Mat. Zh. 16, 224--246 (1975; Zbl 0309.46029)], \textit{S. K. Vodop'yanov} and \textit{V. M. Gol'dshtejn} proved the remarkable result that for a homeomorphism \(\phi:\Omega\to\tilde\Omega\), the composition operator defined by \(\phi^*(f)=f\circ\phi\) is a bounded operator between Sobolev spaces \[ \phi^*: L^{1, n}(\tilde\Omega)\to L^{1, n}(\Omega), \] if and only if \(\phi\) is a quasiconformal mapping. In the paper under review, the authors generalize this result by giving an extra assumption that the distortion function \(K_\phi\) is controlled from above by a BMO-function \(Q\). To be more precise, the main result in the paper is that if \(\phi:\Omega\to\tilde\Omega\) is a BMO-quasiconformal homeomorphism from a bounded Lipschitz domain \(\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\) onto a bounded domain \(\tilde\Omega\subset\mathbb{R}^n\), then the inverse induces a bounded operator \[ (\phi^{-1})^*:H^{1, n}_z(\Omega)\cap \operatorname{Lip}(\Omega)\to L^{1, n}(\tilde\Omega) \] defined by the composition rule \((\phi^{-1})^*(f)=f\circ\phi^{-1}\), where \(H^{1, n}_z(\Omega)\) is a kind of Hardy-Sobolev space. They also establish the norm inequality that \[ \|f\circ\phi^{-1}\|_{L^{1, n}(\tilde\Omega)}\leq\|Q\|^{\frac{1}{n}}_{BMO_z(\Omega)}\|f\|_{H^{1, n}_z(\Omega)}. \]
